I've been experimenting with LED light strips from eBay, these are about £6 for 1m lengths, with great success.<br />

The problem in our van is there are lots of dark spots as the factory fitted roof mounted LED's aren't that bright as they use the older style diode LED's. These were no doubt cutting edge when the van was designed in 2006 but are nothing in comparison to the 12v halogen units they were meant to be replacing.<br />

I've also gone down the route of replacing some of the spot lights / bathroom lights with the latest 5050 type SMD G4 (two pin) LED's. They do the job and are super bright but again don't match up to the sort of lighting effect I wanted to create in our van. They are very cheap though, at about £1 a bulb straight from China!<br />
<br />
So I started looking at LED strips for sale on eBay. The LED strips have come about because of the SMD (surface mounted) LED's which are forming to basis for LED technology moving forward.<br />
<br />
When buying an LED strip you need to consider three variables:<br />
<br />
<b>1.) Brightness</b><br />
 There are three main types, so it would seem, 1210, 3258 and 5050. These figures as far as I can tell are the size and brighness of the LED's - a 3258 LED is 6 lumen whereas a 5050 LED is 18 lumen so considerably brighter.<br />
<br />
<b>2.) Colour Temperature </b><br />
The main two colour temperature's you will find are described as "warm white" which is found at around 3000 kelvin right the way to cool white usually found somewhere around 4000 kelvin. "Daylight" is actually found nearer 6000 kelvin. However, halogen bulbs are much closer to the "warm white" level of the colour spectrum  so it is likely that this colour temperature will appeal the most.<br />
<br />
<b>3.)</b> <b>Waterproof</b><br />
You can also purchase these LED strips which have a waterproof covering, these are ideal if you want to use them on the outside of your van such as an awning light. They are so thin you could easily run them down the inside of your Fiamma awning.<br />

 The picture to the left shows two different LED strips. It's actually pretty hard to photograph them, they are so bright. The strip on the left is a 'Warm White' 1210 strip and the one on the right is a 'Cool White' 5050 strip which is considerably brighter - although it doesn't show that well on the photo.  The beauty of these strips is that you don't need any additional hardware to fit them, they are self adhesive so can just be pealed off and stuck. They can but cut with a pair of scissors at 3 LED intervals and rejoined or re soldered with connections for a few pence from eBay - great if you want a continuous loop around the van under cabinates, for example.<br />

The LED's must be fitted in a location where you can't catch the light straight on - such as behind a rail or under a work surface or similar. They are so incredibly bright and if you stared into one for too long I have no doubt you might damage your sight!<br />
<br />
I've fitted them in three locations in my van - controlled by a very simple 12v flick switch - the same as what Adria uses for it's down lighters. The switch is available with or without an LED tell tale light.<br />
<br />
Now I've used these in my van hooked up direct to the 12v power source which, on mains hookup, runs at about 13.5v without issue. However, you may want to fit an inexpensive voltage regulator into the circuit - I have added one of these to the link section below.<br />
<br />
<b>The Cab</b><br />
It strikes me as a bit odd that Adria didn't put any lights in the cab, since the main seating area in the Twin are the two cab seats where it's impossible to read as standard. The LED strip fits perfectly behind the join between habitation and cab area.<br />

 <b>Under The Interior Step</b><br />
The switch for this light is located near the door, so you can see what you're doing to take your shoes off and also give some welcome light into what was a dingy dark area near the sliding door.<br />

Following on from a series of interesting discussions on one of the Motorhome forums I frequent, I have included a Payback Calculator for a Gaslow Refillable LPG kit.<br />

The included spreadsheet below is divided into two columns to support both arguments - the column on the left is the traditional view that the cost of the whole kit must be fully recuperated by the reduction in gas prices. The right column considers that the kit will always be worth "something" on the second hand market when you come to sell the van and in my experience you can expect to recoup at least 70% of that cost especially if Gaslow continue to increase the price of their kits.<br />

<b>Note: </b>You never actually get your full Calor bottle deposit back so for the purpose of this calculator I will ignore this for two reasons. <b>1.)</b> If you are just starting out, you are probably going to be motorhoming for several years and therefore after a term the <a href="http://tiny.cc/CalorRefund">Calor bottles will be worth next to nothing</a>. <b>2.)</b> If you already have bottles you need your original paperwork in order to get a refund therefore that money is "locked into" your bottles.<br />

<b>Can you put a price on convenience? </b>Does everything you buy always have to save you / earn you money - can't you just enjoy the benefits it brings? These are some of the arguments I've seen. If you can't justify it on repayment alone then you'll have to put a price on the convenience and decide if you feel it is worthwhile.<br />

New Year - New Van, New Blog, New Trip!

So, I've been meaning to start writing some actual content for this blog for a long while but unfortunately paying work usually comes first and thus this has taken a back seat until now!<br />

We're in the progress of planning a new trip from April 2011 for an epic 12 months plus taking in all of the European countries we've not yet visited and as far east as we dare go this time around. There is a lot of planning to do, books to read and stuff to buy but we have plenty of time (I hope!).<br />
<br />
We were also thinking of buying a new van for the journey to replace our Adria Twin, a Globecar 599DB. We have until the 4th of January to make a decision on that (when the VAT goes up to 20%) so watch this space! We would be importing it from Germany and I've written a guide to importing to go on this blog at a later stage.<br />

Today we visited the fairytale castle Neuschwanstein and its neighbouring castle Hohenschwangau which from a distance looked picturesque. We parked with a couple of other campers and took a 30 minute uphill walk to the castle itself. The tour was 35 minutes and the guide took us through many rooms which Ludwig II decorated. It was a beautiful castle but a lot of work was  being carried out so most of the exterior was covered in scafolding. The town itself was entirely based around the two castles therefore seemed quite touristy.<br />

We are now sat on an aire in Lindau - we will explore the town tomorrow morning and then head toward the north of Germany.

At the top there are lots of little cafes which are obviously heaving in the winter season when the place turns into a Ski Resort, but during the summer months have vastly discounted prices. We settled for Apple Strudel which was fantastic. We got the lift back down and then on to the Water Fall which was well worth the walk to and from.</span></span><br />

I'm not sure they'd seen a camper van before and they were in danger of having one as a permanent feature had we not managed to negotiate some of the tiny roads and gaps between houses without incident.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">The lake all revolves around the little island, imaginatively named  Bled Island, in the middle on which there are 99 steps leading up to a small church which was built in the 15th century. The only way to access it is by boat, costing 10 euro if you go on a gondola or the same if you are to hire one of your own. We decided on the latter and Sophie enjoyed being paddled around the lake, although her directions could have been better! </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">We walked the whole trail around the edge of the lake which is about 4 miles and allows you to see not only the island but all of the Julian Alps which surround the lake. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Gets a bit colder here on a night then in Croatia, but thankfully its still 25c + during the day which is ideal. Was going to have a dip in the lake but thought better of it!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">So today is my birthday. I'll not say how old, but old enough for now! It was really nice to spend it in the capital of Ljubljana, the smallest capital we've vistited if you don't include places like San Marino and Monaco. <br /> <br /> Slovenia is such a compact and clean country, everything seems to be just right. The city had an antiques and crafts market in full swing as well as local artists out displaying their works. We walked up to the castle which overlooks the old town and the city as a whole, shielded on all sides by mountain ranges. Getting the tram back down (really, we did that the wrong way!) we walked along the river with weeping willow trees dressing the banks. <br /> <br /> It was hot again today, probably about 25c, and we had a nice lunch in an Italian which massive Pizza's but probably one of the best I've ever had. The prices here are modest too, as was Hungary, but being in Euro's are much easier to understand!<br /> <br /> We spent probably about 5 hours here and it was easy to get to from the campsite (</span> <a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="http://www.ljubljanaresort.si/">www.ljubljanaresort.si</a> )<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">with a bus stop outside and just 1 Euro each way. Next stop... Lake Bled...<br /> </span></div>

So we left the campsite after a few arguments with campsite staff about our discount card which seemed to be fine when we arrived we payed by credit card and then called to cancel the transaction... so be warned, staff at Camping Indije I think have been informed to try and get out of allowing people the discounts! We even parked in the pitch we was asked to in order to obtain the discount, watch this space.<br />
<br />
So bad things seem to come in threes. On the way out we got stuck in a 5 hour tailback which wasn't too bad being in a camper, we just sat back and watched a few episodes of Family Guy and then the 1980's classic Rain Man while drinking orange with ice cubes!<br />
<br />
Once we had got out of Croatia we headed to Italy to Trieste which on the face of it seemed pretty industrial and not very camper friendly. So we headed back inland to spend the night in Slovenia's capital Ljubljana where we will explore tomorrow.<br />
