We boarded our first ferry to Tau from Stavanger nervously since the fee for vans over 6.01m went up 4x. We're 5.98m but that all depends if you take the towbar into consideration or not. So far we've managed it with bridge tolls and the ferry was no exception - you board, get out if you like or stay put and the ticket collector comes round and you say what your driving. I'd imagine you could get away with whatever size van as they don't appear to check so best to get out and pay in the lounge to avoid being challenged. In Norway, the panel van conversion is king!

Today we trekked up Preikestolen, I suspect the severity of this hike is kept hush hush by the Norwegian tourist board - let's just say we saw several soles of walking boots ripped off on the path and a few people turning back, but not us!

The views were breathtaking and while it may be clearer in summer the car park had a 500 car capacity and coach tours run from miles around so I can't imagine it would be enjoyable as the majority of the route is single file with few if any passing places.

Tonight we're a bit sore and resting before another ferry or two tomorrow as we make our way slowly to Bergen.

We're parked up for the night and for the first time in a couple of weeks there has been no wifi first time! I'm not going to move the van - I'm too tired - so am posting from my Blackberry so excuse the large pictures and unformatted posts!

The journey from Oslo has been slow going - we chose a cross country route as the south of Norway didn't seem as appealing and we'd like to get away from the coast for a while.

The roads are like driving in the Alps with hairpin bends and sheer drops and when we're not screaming up a hill we're free-wheeling down the other side of it to try and even out the MPG. I can't say it hasn't been worthwhile though - the views have been breathtaking. 
<br />
<br />
It was Norwegian Day and we were treated to street parades in national dress on the route.
<br />
<br />
Stavanger was a bit disappointing and we've decided that we're going to concentrate on the countryside rather then the towns and that suits us just fine! We found a little place to bed down for the night and get the ferry in the morning to Tau.

Oslo in a Motorhome

Our relationship with Oslo got off to a rocky start as the car park we had initially chosen between the Natural History museum and Munch Museum gave us an impromptu view of a different side of the city. In the evening and the following morning the car park had been taken over by about 25 VW T4 of various registrations housing immigrants and the park was taken over by gang masters giving their orders for the day. This probably heightened our awareness of the number of beggars and "looky looky" men and women selling squeakers, playing accordions and sporting limps and sticks which was a big detractor and something not witnessed in either Copenhagen or Stockholm.<br />

We moved first thing in the morning to another car park at the Sculpture Park which not only was an excellent location, and free from any unsettling activity, but provided a great walk into the city down one of the main shopping strips. The carpark itself would be suitable for 6m vans or if you have an overhang you can throw it off the back in a couple of spots around the edge. No signs indicating no campers / overnight and charges are 16kr/hour 9-5 Mon-Fri, 9-3 Sat and free Sunday. GPS: N59.92862, E10.70363. There was in fact lots of 'Wild Camping' possibilities near the Castle and ferry terminals but this one suited us fine for the quietness and great access to the sculpture park to explore after a day in the city. Much of the city centre parking is time limited to 2 hours during daytime hours but a little further afield it is unlimited. You would probably rank it #1 if you like Museum's and if you do this is one of the rare occasions where an 'Oslo Card' would be worthwhile, since there is at least 50. We did all of the main sights from the outside in just under a day and were again blessed with 20+ heat and last night we had our first rainstorm of the trip - not bad for 5 weeks in Scandinavia!<br />

The american influence continues with queues at every TGI Friday's yet many local eateries remained empty.<br />

If and when we need essentials we'll be looking for a 'Rema 1000' tipped to be the cheapest option here, since Netto is positioned much more mainstream like Tesco or Sainsburys.<br />

Overall? Spend a day in Oslo, maybe two if you like Museums<br />

After Orebro we made a run for the border, calling in at a couple of towns along the way. We've been using <a href="http://www.europebycamper.com/2011/03/dashboard-mounted-laptop-gps.html">Autoroute </a>to navigate right into the centre of these towns to suss them out before parking up and exploring since you never really know what to expect. We're flicking between two sets of guidebooks - Eyewitness since it has pictures but slightly rose tinted descriptions (we've found) and Lonely Planet with no pictures but with very honest reviews which can sometimes save time.</div>

After a tank of diesel on the Swedish side we crossed over into Norway at about 6pm on a minor road with no customs minius a few potatoes that we threw out in the last layby in Sweden. It was about 20 miles to Halden - another double page spread in the guidebook but given the misadventure with the last one (Uppsala) we were being cautious with this one!</div>

The town wasn't anything to write home about and the Castle was best viewed from the top, where we parked to spend the night. It wasn't actually open until 1st May, however it was all open and unlocked so we spent a good couple of hours exploring despite it being 9-10pm at night it was only just starting to turn to dusk.</div>

Today we've travelled to Fredriksend where the old town exists on a sort of fortified island. Somewhere in the restoration it must have lost some of its original features and gone down a sort of country and western theme, it didn't seem very original!</div>

Now parked near the centre of Oslo in the only best looking municipal carpark we could find in the centre near Munch Museet, £10 for Saturday and free on Sunday with Wifi to boot. Driving in Oslo was an experience compared to Stockholm with some anti rat-run barriers and serious pavement mounting required to navigate around some of the locals abandoning their cars and vans where they wanted to! Not quite sure to make of Oslo yet, so keep an eye out for the next update!</div>

We left Stockholm on Tuesday morning after spending 5 nights there, we could have easily stayed longer but we needed a bit of a rest after hiking round the city and parkland in 25-30 degree heat. We did everything we wanted to do and would still return and do it all again. It's in our top 3 capital's, but it's position is yet to be determined.<br />
<br />
We travelled north east to visit some of the castles in our guide book, the weather continued to be searing and once again we had the whole grounds to ourselves to explore in the continuing heat (we've even used the air-con for the first time on this trip, although only for ten minutes!). Steninge was also vacant expect for Volvo trying to persuade some fleet buyers to order the new C30 electric hybrid.<br />

Uppsala commanded a double page spread in our guidebook, but the reality there wasn't a great deal to see there and the highlight of the day was Sophie navigating me the wrong way up a one way street and up a cycle track!<br />

The next day we wanted to get some miles under our belt so that we could get into Norway and Oslo for the weekend since there isn't a great deal to see in this region of Sweden. There was a UNESCO world heritage site however, which again was deserted and we wandered around the old buildings and machinery dating from the 1700's. Bit spooky if you ask me!<br />
<br />
Our long trek was rewarded, however, with Orebro close to the Norwegian border. The town had a lovely castle and the fast flowing river and fluffy clouds (haven't seen any of those for weeks!) gave a great backdrop. Every duck had 8-10 ducklings following it in an orderly line and we counted a Goose with 14 babies!<br />

Tomorrow we pass over into Norway, so we'd better fill up with cheap (ish) diesel while we can!<br />

That said, we're more than happy to walk around on foot and enjoy the sights available for free and we've now walked to the edges of the tourist map in every direction.<br />

On our way there we passed an army recruitment day and the war ships were lined up on show along with military vehicles etc which was followed by a picnic in the park before we made our way to the TV Tower which was a reasonable £4.50 each to get to the top. After a frustrating ten minutes of trying to shoot my SLR through the mesh I remembered Sophie's camera in my rucksack and was soon snapping away, it's tiny lens peeping between the railings. The whole area was swamped with Russian tourists - in fact the vast majority of buses here are Russian registered. We explored the second park Ladugardsgardet where a Circus was setting up, no Lions but plenty of Camels and Zebra's on show.<br />

To be honest, the changing of the guard with its horses and extravagance is probably enough - the palace was nice, but if you've been to as many old stately homes as we have you become a bit numb to it. The treasury was 'OK' but I think 45 minutes for a guided tour must be padded out a but since we were round it twice in ten minutes - so maybe spend the £14 entrance for this somewhere else.<br />

Sodermalm, the most southern island, didn't really have a lot to offer us other than views back over to Gamla Stan and the imposing sight of a cruise ship docking (loaded with Russian tourists no doubt!).<br />

Tomorrow we'll be visiting the Ostermalm markets and relaxing in the park, maybe hire some bikes for the afternoon before heading off to replenish our tanks and make our way to Oslo with our expectations set high!<br />

Despite being a very bright, sunny day old town which is probably the biggest tourist attraction in the city was largely quiet and we enjoyed an hour exploring the maze of old cobbled streets - avoiding the obligatory tourist tat shops along the way save to buy a postcard. We sat and enjoyed lunch in the sunshine and out of the wind where it could have easily passed for 20c (I say enjoyed, £5.50 for bread and ham from Co-Op, that or nearly £9 for two ready made sandwiches! I stress again, pack your van as if you were visiting the moon!).<br />

I don't know if we can last much longer on this trip without a good curry!<br />

It all worked out for the best, as we were able to stand and observe the impressive changing of the guards ceremony, I'm not sure I could ever master the trombone - never mind on horseback! (short clip available <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLyyEonVJZM">HERE</a>.)<br />

Sophie picked up some new shoes at probably the largest shoe shop in Stockholm. We chatted to the shop worker again, yet another person who rarely sees English tourists. It was interesting to learn not only are English lessons compulsory in Sweden but also it is taught in the 'Queen's English' - any American or other accent is strictly forbidden. Possibly not as strict in Denmark, where a Danish shop working expressed it would "last us long time" in an almost perfect Chinese accent!<br />

It's Friday and the Swede's are showing off in their Lambogini's and Ferrari's, they've probably been stored since last year as apparently the snow only cleared here 3-4 weeks ago.<br />

Looking forward to another full day tomorrow, feel slighly cheeky parked here in central Stockholm with view of the Radison and high class hotels and luxury yaughts a stones throw away - but all is above board, three other campers have joined us (one tag axel parked side on to the Marina) and we've seen a team of 4 parking Wardens who left everyone be. I can't say that this will necessarily continue so if you want to take advantage do so soon!.<br />

We've travelled 425 miles since our last blog entry, across Sweden from Varberg to Stockholm, stopping in two great wild camping spots in Granna and Eskilstuna. The route, however, has been largely unrewarding and we've checked both Lonley Planet and Eyewitness Guides for this area and found not a lot of interest - I think in an ideal world you would approach Stockholm via a coastal route if you wanted scenery.  That's not to say the countryside hasn't been pleasant enough, you can't expect great sights every stop! We've had a couple of pretty grey days weather wise but we've made a bee-line for Stockholm because of a break in the weather forcast for this weekend - fingers crossed it materialises.<br />

Today we went to Drottningholm - a large country estate on the outskirts of the capital in which the Royal Family now resides after giving up their residence in the Palace in central Stockholm, which is now only used for formal occasions. It was largely deserted and we spent a couple of hours getting lost in the grounds. We then decided to explore the island further - which turned out to be the back of beyond so we quickly turned round and headed for the capital.<br />
<br />
Following our sucess with parking in the centre of Copenhagen we've wanted to try our luck with Stockholm, so following a tip off, we've found some parking right in the centre (as in I can see the palace from here!) which is free after 5pm and free Sat/Sun - so just £12 tomorrow to pay! We spent 3 hours having a wander round and getting our bearings, I see we're going to need the full 3 days at least to try and take it all in! More to follow...<br />

After passing into Sweden via the Øresund Bridge (which, being sad like we are, we <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNbAWJeml3Q">videoed</a>) we arrived in Malmo feeling pleased with ourselves and with Fiat for making our van 2mm shy of 6m and thus saving us £35 on the bridge toll (say nothing of the towbar or bullbar). Our initial impressions for Malmo were that of a busy port city and while I don't doubt that the city itself is worth a visit we wanted to press on and see some countryside.<br />

Our first night was spent in Gamla Bo, on a lake where we were joined with by a German motor home who obviously possessed similar Wild spot locating skills to ourselves. The following day we visited Lund, a pleasant town with a large university and a young feel and to Helsingborg the Swiss version of Helsingor which is on the Danish side, looking back over the water at the Castle (Slot) we had stayed at a few days earlier.<br />

As we were awaiting a package from home to arrive at the Campsite in Varborg and while we hate travelling back on ourselves, we decided to go and visit Göteborg before driving 40 miles South back to the campsite to recharge, refuel and do 4 loads of washing.<br />
We were there in time for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walpurgis_Night">Walpurgis Night</a> - a sort of Summer Festival which appears to have been taken on by the students in recent years judging by the home made carnival floats mounted on shopping trolleys!<br />

I type this from the <a href="http://www.uk.apelviken.se/Campsite">Apel Vixen </a>site which while very much out of season, is very pleasant and participially accommodating by allowing us to have a couple of packages sent here. I almost felt cheeky producing our ACSI card for our £11 stay, what's more their Wifi is easily the fastest internet connection I've ever used and we've managed to back up all the photo's we've taken so far.<br />

We travelled <b>1157 miles</b> through Denmark in over a period of <b>18 days, </b>from 11th until 28th April 2011. It was an onward journey and as such we are continuing to Sweden and coming back via Finland / Estonia. Much of the information about Denmark as a place to visit is available in our <a href="http://www.europebycamper.com/p/country-guide_01.html#Denmark">Denmark Country Guide (Click)</a> however this is a personal reflection of our trip and our Wild Camping locations which are displayed on the Google Map at the bottom of this post.</div>

What did we think to Denmark? Firstly we were blessed with fantastic weather for all but the first couple of days, it was between 20 and 28c at it's peak. This was the start to our 12 month trip and we didn't want to rush around too quickly as we both needed some time to relax and unwind and get back into the swing of life in a Campervan.</div>

We didn't have any expectations for Denmark, it is certainly a very clean and orderly country and at no point did we feel unsafe when wild camping. It's worth mentioning that there are very few motor homes or campers due to the high tax on "luxury" vehicles of 180%, meaning carvans are extremely popular (as are trailers for some reason, try and spot a car without a towbar!). Wild camping is tolerated and widely practiced by the Norwegians and German vans we saw. We only saw one other English registered van on our trip.</div>

Which brings me on to English, while everyone we spoke to could speak fluent English you could be forgiven for thinking they aspire to be British, in fact the people we spoke to had only ever met a handful of English tourists in Denmark. Instead, English is a convenient bridging language between Scandinavian countries and their neighbours and if anything the influence feels more American than British, certainly with the younger people we spoke to. It does make Denmark incredibly accessible to English though.</div>

Tourist information is excellent, however you will begin to realise that in a lot of cases its a lot of fuss about nothing - with maps and glossy magazines for towns which in all fairness don't warrant them and often taken up by "further afield" so we stopped picking them up after a while. </div>

Price wise, Denmark is expensive - imagine shopping in Aldi but at Waitrose prices and you have an idea. I would recommend stocking up in Germany before crossing the border, especially for beer/wine. The Danes have the highest bottle tax in Europe which makes buying anything in a plastic or glass bottle expensive - so remember to take them back for recycling to get your "Pant" back. Fuel, surprisingly, is about 20p/litre cheaper then in the UK but prices at stations fluctuated on an hourly basis and varies by as much as 25p - fill up when you see the cheapest rather then when you are running on fumes!</div>

Fresh water can be obtained at rest areas on motorways (every other rest area had them, we found) and waste disposal is available at the same place. Marina's are also accessible and we were allowed to fill up with fresh water and empty our toilet in the facilities provided - but ask first. </div>

Copenhagen was excellent, not quite as much wow factor as some of the cities we have visited and slightly numbed by the amount of construction and a new pipeline that was going down was creating but a good few days could be had wandering around and enjoying the atmosphere. The list of things to do and see is relatively small - the Round Tower, Botanical Gardens, Carlsberg Brewery and Gallery (opposite ends of the city) are all worth a visit.</div>

In summary, we really liked Denmark and if you like peaceful towns and excellent beaches - get here now! If you like history, castles, forests and landscapes I would plan your route carefully and consider spending more time on the second two islands.<br />
