We stayed the night at a free aire just outside Brussels in Grimbergen where behind us there was a great little bakery which was open at 8:30 when we left for Brussles - fresh Pan Aux Choc's for our breakfast and bread rolls for our lunch! We made our way to the Atomium as the sun was rising - see the above pictures. We then headed for the city centre - we had decided to try and get parked as close to the centre as possible as there were no camp sites or aires near to train or bus stations to use public transport. As luck would have it on our first lap round we pulled<br />
into an on street space just 5 minutes walk from the Grand Palace - the main attraction! We were treated to blue skies for the first hour until it clouded over and grew cold.<br />
<br />
We spent 3 hours walking round the sights - although unfortunately some  of them were a little further afield so we had to miss out the EU Parliament building and one or two others. We also happened upon a slightly more seedy area behind the train station while cutting through - I thought we was walking past an underwear shop when suddenly the manikin moved - it was hookers in a great big window - it was like being back in Amsterdam!<br />
<br />
On the way out of Brussels en route to Luxembourg we filled up with LPG  (35c/L) and Diesel (82c/L), at the same service station we found something we haven't been able to find since England..... Bacon! Three rashers for 2euro! Brussels is pretty expensive for everything except fuel it seems - we've not done a food shop since Germany, except for bread and milk. <br />
<br />
We're currently at a camp site just over the border in Steinfort 11miles from the capital and will be the last campsite we'll be on until Paris - so we've made use of the hot showers and did what we hope to be our last load of washing.

early in the morning. We stopped outside the Rathaus, which we now know to mean 'town hall', and took a few photos.<br />

The bad weather was persistent so we made our way to Munster where we the Christmas market had just started. When we arrived we discovered the Christmas market was the largest we have come across so far and it was heaving with coach parties. The market seemed to wind its way through all the little streets and squares near the Rathaus, lots of stalls were selling Christmas punch and Bratwursts (We are trying not to buy one at every Christmas market we go to!)<br />
<br />
We had decided to drive down to Cologne before heading to the<br />
Netherlands so we made our way in that direction. When we arrived at the Aire about 2km up the river from the centre of Cologne we were astounded by the number of UK registered campervans - at least 20 or so! We payed 8 Euro including electric and while setting up we got talking to a couple who told us about an Aire in Brugge which will come in handy inthe next week or so.<br />
<br />
As it was so busy we decided the best way to get into Cologne would be to take the bikes down the cycle path that runs right next to the river from the Aire for about 2 miles. It was very cold but only took us about 20 minutes to bike into the centre. There I managed to find an new fitted coat from H&M!<br />

We woke up this morning to the sound of rain - and most of the other <br />
campers here at the aire buggering off! It's a walking boots and big <br />
coats day ....<br />
<br />
We caught the bus into the centre which only took 5 minutes, there were <br />lots of English buses where we stayed the night and this was also <br />evident in the centre too. The houses and shop fronts were charming and <br />the canals meandered through the streets. However, it seemed quite <br />touristy with the cafe's showing off their Michelin stars in the windows <br />There was also speakers all over the place in the main square but also <br />down the little side streets with 'Proper Crimbo' playing which kind of <br />spoilt the mood and Bruge didn't need these things which we thought let <br />the city down.<br />
<br />
Other than that the little Belgium chocolate shops were lovely and in <br />one you could see the truffles being made. There were lots of little <br />cafe's and lace shops too. It was very wet and rainy but we managed to <br />take a few good photos of the nicer aspects of Bruges.

We arrived in Antwerp and were able to park right in the centre, as we<br />
have been able to do in nearly all of the places we have visited so far.<br />
There was a thick mist in the air and we wandered around the streets<br />
looking at the sights. We found an English book shop in Amsterdam that<br />
had a load of Eyewitness travel guides which we already had for most of<br />
the places we knew we would be visiting - except for Belgium - they were<br />
all reduced to 5 euro and it will come in very handy for Belgium I'm<br />
sure. We wandered into a Gothic style Catholic church and was given a<br />
tour by an enthusiastic (if it little scary at first!) guide who showed<br />
us round. It is certainly nothing like any of the churches or<br />
catherdials we had seen so far as it was mostly wood carvings in place<br />
of stained glass and a large picture behind the alter which could be<br />
changed by a pully system - to keep to congregation interested and<br />
focused he said!<br />
<br />
The guy said there was a lot of Roman influence from the guy (who's name<br />
escapes me) who designed and built the church and this is visable in the<br />
surrounding streets, which it was. This, however, might have had<br />
something to do with all the Italian restaurant's close by - complete<br />
with token Italians heckling you in!<br />

As it was our first trip to Belgium we had to sample some chocolates, we<br />
made our way to the smallest and most exclusive looking chocolate shops<br />
and bought some truffles - one of which we're eating right now. Nice<br />
isn't the word! We've split Antwerp and Ghent up into two posts as they were both so nice and wanted to share the pictures of both!

So... we like Belgium!<br />

It is sort of like Germany but without the lack of 'authentic' history. <br />Ghent was a little more challenging to get parked but we managed it and <br />had a good walk around the centre. We've been looking for a Starbucks or an unsecured network we can post our blogs from... no luck yet, but <br />we'll keep looking!<br />

Diesel has dropped to an amazing 85c/litre and we filled up a tank full - having paid upto 1.25/litre it was a big saving. We've also been managing over 31MPG on the last tank thanks in part to the flat Netherlands no doubt.<br />

Tonight we are parked in central Bruge at an Aire right next to the bus station with about 18 other campers - a handful of which are English.  Tomorrow we'll venture into the centre and the day after we should be in <br />Brussles. I'll try and get Sophie to write the next blogs!!

We returned to Amesterdam in the morning to go on a cruise of the<br />
cannals - something we missed on Day 1 as it was getting dark by the<br />
time we go back to the station where the boats also depart. It is<br />
certainly one of the best ways to see the city and we were taken past<br />
Anne Frank's house and the mayors residence and many other facts about Amsterdam were explained to us.<br />

<br />
We got back to the campsite around 2pm and set off on our journey to Gouda and Rotterdam. There aren't nearly as many Aires or even campsites for that matter in the Netherlands and we decided after visiting Gouda<br />
and seeing how industrial Rotterdam was to press on into Belgium. Amsterdam is certainly the highlight of the Netherlands we wouldn't go as far as to say it is all 'flat an boring' as we've heard said before once you've seen a few windmills and a few cannals that just about sums it up!<br />

Tonight we are staying on a free Aire just inside Belgium near Antwerp and although little more than a car park we've been joined by two other Belgium campers which is always a good sign.

On our journey into the Netherlands we pulled in at the first fuel<br />
station to fill up with LPG which by now had dropped to 50c/litre- only<br />
to discover that the dutch have their own unique filling adapter which<br />
we didn't know - so a quick U turn back to Germany to fill up<br />
(fortunately only 3 miles to the nearest station as we were right on the<br />
border) and we were raring to go.<br />
<br />
We arrived in camping Zeeburg late on Friday after a few issues with<br />finding a suitable route into the campsite because of a low bridge. The<br />campsite was basic but for 15 euros and 5 minutes walk to a tram which<br />took you into the centre for 1.60 each we couldn't complain.  First impressions of the city were that there appeared to be a large number of English, especially Geordies although this may have had something to do<br />with us deciding to have a bacon and egg McMuffin for our breakfast while they were having Big Mac's trying to recover from the night before!<br />
<br />
There is definitely something for everyone in Amsterdam and we tried to take in as much of the city centre as possible. A large part of Amsterdam is geared toward tourists (noticeable from the number of 'tourist tat' shops - Amsterdam hat anyone?), be it shopping, exploring the relaxed culture of the coffee shops, the flower markets or the red light district. There were probably as many couples present as there was groups of lads. The shopping was great, although it was easy to have Deja-vu as a great number of branded shops repeated themselves on different streets.<br />
<br />
However there is a lot of history to see and we were blessed with bright blue skies - a lot of the houses and<br />bridges over the cannals in the centre date back to as early as the 1600's and Amsterdam was not bombed heavily during WW2 so it made a refreshing change that everything wasn't rebuilt and suspiciously new<br />looking as was the case with Germany.<br /><br />
Tomorrow we shall return and view Amsterdam from the waterways as by the time we had explored the city centre on foot it was dark!

After Berlin we were ahead of schedule so we travelled upto the Baltic
Sea, we had a lazy day around the coast and stayed on a campsite for two
nights.<br />
<br />
We didn't spend a lot of time in Lubeck we just whipped round the main 
attractions, Lubeck is kind of marooned in the middle of an island with 
one bridge which takes you over to it. We travelled to Hamburg and 
arrived there for lunch time.<br />
<br />
We managed to get parked in the centre of 
Hamburg on the 1st December which is when the Christmas market started 
in the centre near the Rathaus (City Hall)<br />
<br />
We have seen many Christmas 
markets but none of them had been in full swing. The atmosphere was 
great and many people had turned out for the first day of the market.

We saw a few attractions but bypassed the huge shopping centre as we had 
run out of time on the parking meter.<br />
<br />
We also drove to the southern park 
of the city to see a U-434 Submarine which was one of the biggest 
non-nuclear soviet submarines. As Adam was looking forward to the VW 
Museum in Wolfsburg we pressed on to an aire which we had found that was 
on the VW premises.

The factory tour lasted an hour and <br>showed us the new VW Golf in production and all the humans and robots <br>involved in the process.<p>Afterwards we stocked up on supplies again and we are now heading to <br>Hannover.
