Just a quick update to say that we have gone from having no internet to <br />
internet fast enough for us to catch most of the first episode of Top <br />
Gear on BBC iPlayer!<br />
<br />
We didn't drive too far today, just up the road to The Republic of San <br />Marino. We got here about 3:30 and decided to go to a camp site as we <br />have spent the last few days free camping and we had a stack of washing <br />to do (the laundry at Pompei wasn't up to much). We have the place to <br />ourselves and have done two loads of washing and cleaned the camper <br />inside.... I'm not too sure where to start on the outside its so bug <br />encrusted - so I just cleaned the lights (!). Diesel is cheaper here <br />than in Italy @ 1.14EURO so we'll be filling up before we leave.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow we're going to get up early and go to the tower which we just <br />drove passed today and see what is to see of Rimini before heading <br />North. We have decided on a route through Europe - missing out Spain, <br />opting to see some other countries instead. This way Spain could be <br />revisited in the future which could take in the West side of France we <br />missed out also. Although it will be cold, the skies will be clear and <br />we've packed enough jumpers and coats it would be a shame not to use <br />them! We will be heading into Switzerland and then onto Austria (maybe <br />Hungry), Czech, Poland, Germany, Netherlands and Belgium before heading <br />home.

Apologies for the delayed update, we've had problems with internet <br />
coverage since we left Pompei so have been unable to update the blog <br />
when we wanted to.<br />
We've spent two days mostly traveling, from Pompei we got on the toll <br />roads and headed south  as far as Taranto which was a large industrial <br />place. 'Look at that cloud!' we said from about 20 miles out, pointing <br />to a strange white light bulb shaped cloud in an otherwise blue sky - <br />only to find it was coming from one of the MANY factories there. We <br />headed to our stop, Villa Castelli, which was an Olive Oli producer next <br />to a MASSIVE radio mast (and we still couldn't get any internet <br />reception!). The houses surrounding Castelli all had similar, strange <br />round shaped roofs which we haven't seen anywhere else in Italy. From <br />there we traveled to Bari and the hugged the coast up as far as Termoli <br />where we planned to stay the second night.<br />
We eventually found the place as mentioned in our book after asking some <br />locals and plucked up the courage to knock on the door. An old lady <br />opened and looked at us very confused. About five minutes later the <br />owner of the farm and his wife turned up on a motorbike followed by a <br />car with his three daughters in. They all looked very confused to see us <br />and spoke to each other in fast italian with lots of arm movements! <br />Eventually, one of the girls asked me in English "Why do you want to <br />stay here?" - I showed them the book - they'd never seen it before - but <br />it was their farm in it! The old guy who's farm it was proclaimed 'no <br />problemo!' and invited in to have a meal with them. I don't think they <br />really knew what was expected of them! We declined and parked for the <br />night, after being shown their wine they produce on their 45hectar <br />property and we bought 3 bottles for 13EURO.<br />
Today we travelled up the coast from Termoli to our stop tonight just <br />outside Ancona in a truck stop alongside a couple of other camper vans <br />where I sit writing this blog. The coast is nice, but no nicer than the <br />south of France and we stopped for lunch along the way, and to fill up <br />with water from a stand pipe in a town (Gordon's hose attachments come <br />in again!) All of the camper stops were closed - we did find a camp site <br />open but the guy wanted 20EURO to stay and that didn't include showers <br />or electric so we pressed on to where we are now.<br />
Tomorrow we'll slow down a bit and explore a bit of this area of Italy <br />and start to plan our journey North.

We arrived in Pompei around 3pm after having a lay in from our free <br />
stop. I had read that driving around Pompei was like 'playing on a <br />
playstation game' - it really has to be seen to be believed. Nobody <br />
obeys street signs or road markings, or even traffic lights and everyone <br />
uses their horn as much as their accelerator pedal! After that ordeal <br />
was over and done with we parked up at 'Camping Spartacus' - a <br />
refreshing 14euro a night and parked directly opposite the entrance of <br />
the ruins. We did however run out of gas and had to travel up the road <br />
for a refill which was 8euro, not too bad, but we will certainly be <br />
getting straight on the toll roads to get out of here!<br />
We were joined on the site by a friendly Kiwi couple in a UK camper van <br />and spent the evening drinking wine and swapping places to visit and to <br />stay.<br />
Today we went into the ruins, the scale of them is impressive and we <br />walked around the streets for several hours. I'd imagine that you could <br />spend a whole day if you were really into your history, but we took in <br />as much as we could in three hours and came back to start planning the <br />rest of our trip and do some chores around the camper.<br />
We have decided that we are not going to go any further down to Sicily <br />since there is nothing any further south of here that we want to see, <br />and a Ferry from Naples is nearly £300, so we will be heading over to <br />the east coast of Italy before traveling up through some of Eastern <br />Europe, we shall plan this leg in more detail over the next few days.<br />

<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: 85%;">We woke up early again and it was a gorgeous day, really sunny and warm without a cloud in the sky. We got the same bus into Rome with our sights set for the Vatican museum as we didn't have chance to visit it yesterday. When we got there all we could see was people and 3 big Panasonic screens up around the square and then we saw the Pope, he was making a speech and it seemed everyone had turned out to see him so the Vatican was shut until 1pm. We took a few photos and headed towards the Pantheon. We stopped and took a few more photos on our way there as it was about an hours walk from where we were at the Vatican.<br /><br />The Pantheon was pretty impressive and it was also free entry! After taking a stroll round the Pantheon which was based in a big square with lots of little restraunts based around the outside. We decided to sit down and have something to eat for lunch as we haven't really eaten out in Italy yet so we thought we'd sample the local flavors. As it is low season all the restraunts had offers. We sat down and had Pasta, a glass of wine/beer and a coffee for 12 Euroes which wasn't bad - plus the waiter was really lovely and took a photo of us at our table outside the Pantheon.<br /><br />We then had another stroll down the main shopping street (by this time my feet were really hurting and I was actually struggling to walk!) After a few purchases we took the metro back to where we got off the bus and headed back to the campsite. We filled the tank up and emptied the waste and headed off for a Green Stop 24 site which was about 30 miles south of Rome. After a few miner glitches with me not being able to read maps etc we got there to find it had all been boarded up and had a bit of difficulty turning the camper round as there was 6 foot gates inf ront of us and no where to turn round! Very traumatic!<br /><br />We looked at our Aires guide for Italy and found something 10 miles up the road, we turned up and there was no other campers there as expected but we were so tired from walking round Rome and driving for 2 hours so we but the ratchet straps across the doors and put the oven on for Pizza.<br /><br />This morning everything was fine and we are now driving towards Pompei (Avoiding Naples!!) to a camp site Adam found last night whilst I was sleeping. We will update tonight or tomorrow night. Nice weather today too - around 20C.</span>

Last night we arrived at our site and went straight for a hot shower and <br />to put a load of washing on in the Laundry. The site is really close to <br />Rome (<a href="http://www.ecvacanze.it/en/elite_family/rome/camping-village-roma">http://www.ecvacanze.it/en/elite_family/rome/camping-village-roma</a>) <br />and fairly expensive at €29 a night - but then anything is expensive <br />when you consider we've been staying for free most nights!<br />
It was a wonderful evening and we put the awning out on the van of the <br />first time and sat under it with tables and chairs. We got talking to an <br />Australian family in a German registered van they had hired for a few <br />weeks and shared some of our books of free places to stay - it was nice <br />to have a proper conversation in English! We had Spag Bol for tea and <br />sat outside drinking bear until 11 before heading inside to bed. There <br />was an almighty thunderstorm in the night, followed by a loud bang this <br />morning - the awning on the Australian family's van snapped under the <br />weight of the rain. Ouch, I'm glad I put ours away before we went to bed.<br />
We got on the bus and were at the Vatican for 9am. We decided against <br />joining the ques and set about seeing some of the other sights Rome has <br />to offer. We quickly established that we would have to stay another <br />night at the site to cram it all in! The weather was warm - about 22C <br />but overcast and we walked round Castel Sant Angelo, The Spanish Steps, <br />Fontana di Trevi and of course the Colosseum plus plenty in between. In <br />fact the only thing we didn't manage to see is the Pantheon which we <br />will visit tomorrow as well as the Vatican. I discovered that as a under <br />25 EU citizen you get a half price entry at most places. Hurray!<br />
At 5pm, however, it suddenly went pitch black we were treated to a <br />massive thunderstorm. The back pack I had been lugging round all day <br />with mine and Sophie's waterproof jackets suddenly became worthwhile as <br />we dawned them as soon as we saw the birds swarm and the fork lightning <br />dance across the sky.<br />
So first impressions of Rome? Fantastic history and great sights - the <br />skyline is littered with Roman and historic buildings and monuments with <br />no 'modern' buildings in sight. It would be even better if you could <br />remove the insane traffic, however, and I can't imagine how busy it <br />would be in season.<br />
However, to clarify something in the other post - the 'Lookie Lookie men <br />(that is, Look what I have to sell you, rather then Lucky Lucky as <br />Sophie reported earlier!) were everywhere. From trusting roses in front <br />of Sophies face to dressing up as Caesar and charging to have your photo <br />taken next to them - which was comical. What was even more comical was <br />how they suddenly switched to selling umbrellas for €5 when it started <br />to rain and to see people buy them only to open them and they'd <br />instantly turn inside out or if you was less fortunate come off the stem <br />completely and fly across the road! Oh how we laughed!<br />
It's 10:30 here now and I can already here Sophie snoring from the bed <br />as I type this, so it is time that I joined her - another early start <br />tomorrow and I want to make the most of those hot showers....

They were everywhere!! Every 10 meters</span></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 85%;">you walked/drove there was another one trying to sell you umbrellas or</span></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 85%;">D&G sunglasses which I thought in someways spoiled Pisa as it is such a</span></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 85%;">nice place. However .....</span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 85%;">We walked toward the leaning tower and found how much of a tourist<br />attraction it was. There were crowds of people everywhere but that<br />didn't really bother us as the leaning tower was amazing. We walked<br />round and took some photos and found out how much the tickets were to<br />get up to the top of the tower - 15 euroes each just for the tower and<br />an extra 10 euroes each for the other attractions around the leaning<br />tower. So we decided not to go up to the top but Pisa was really<br />beautiful and we would both definitely recommend it to others.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 85%;">As we headed towards our overnight stop we found an E.Leclerc which was a big supermarketlike Carrefour.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 85%;">We went in and spent 50 Euroes but from the photo above our fridge is full and so are our cupboards! A well needed food shop as we hadn't seen a proper supermarket in Italyup until now!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: 85%;">We drove about 20 miles from Pisa to Cecina where we are staying<br />tonight, we also made a friend (see in the photos above!) We had lots of tasty cured meats which we bought from E.Leclerc earlier today with lots of salad. Yum!</span></div>

So this morning we got up early and headed towards Pisa, it took us around 1 hour 30 minutes to get there from where we staye...

Not much to report in this entry, we set off from the vinyards at about<br />
11:30 which we stayed the night and made our way slowly down windy roads<br />
towards Pisa. The journey was supposed to take two hours - but with the<br />
state of the roads and the views it took closer to five. But we were in<br />
no rush (Sophie was driving) and stopped and had a lunch of.... Noodles!<br />
Our stocks were getting low and we still hadn't passed a supermarket,<br />
hopefully there will be one soon!<br />
We had to fill up with Diesel as we were getting low, Agip seem to be<br />the cheapest for diesel here at 1.18. However the one we stopped at was<br />a pre-payment station, which has blown my MPG calculator until we can<br />next fill up a full tank but I'm sure it's still doing well.<br />
We eventually got to Certaldo just before sunset. When we arrived<br />there was already three italian camper's there and it looked a bit<br />tight. The old guy we met at the door rambled on in fast Italian about a<br />'problemo' and 'no telephono' - persuamably moaning about us not<br />telephoning in advance - something that the UK version of our guide says<br />you don't have to do (first come first served). We were given a pitch on<br />a bit of a slope, and wern't given the four star treatment that a fith<br />italian camper as given (full guided tour, access to the pool etc). No<br />matter, we only wanted to stay one night. Still not bad, out of all the<br />places we have stayed this is the first time we haven't been felt 110%<br />welcomed. I made Pizza's for tea on Naan breads. Tomorrow we set off<br />from Pisa and Sophie will update the blog.<br />
